Kindergarten artists also learned about line and color before starting a project relating to Mexico. We had a great time making our own skeletons. We were able to review line types while creating our background, practice cutting skills, and we enjoyed gluing our "bones" to our skeletons.
After learning about line and color Davidson 1st graders also began learning about the art of Mexico. After seeing the 5th graders soft sculptures we were very interested in skeletons. We used what we had learned about line and color to create some amazing skeletons using printing techniques. We finished off the skeletons with bright colors in honor of the art of Mexico.

When we were done creating our skeleton prints we were also able to learn about sugar skulls! Sugar skulls are treats left on Dia de los Muertos alters. Because we knew we would love our tiny skulls and didn't want to attract ants into our homes we made our sugar skulls out of air dry clay and decorated them with metallic markers. To finish them off we created some nifty frames using cardboard, tempera paint, and oil pastels. We had them finished just in Time for Dia de los Muertos!
2nd grade first took a look at
Papel Picado from Mexico. Papel Picado or cut paper banners are often found at Celebrations in Mexico. Some people say these banners are windows to a new world. Many people believe that when you pass them you can leave your troubles behind even if just for a moment. We thought that this was a fun place to start our look at the art of Mexico.

Next, we learned about an artist named
Josefina Aguilar. Josefina Aguilar is one of the most famous ceramic artist in Mexico. We learned that Josefina learned to make clay sculptures from her parents and even after having nine children she still makes these sculptures today. We made our own version of a sculpture after seeing Josefina's artwork.
